@Warren (Albany Lawyer) - You can use copyright statements with link to your blog in your feed footer. That acts as a deterrent in most cases.

In case some blog is outranking you, do not hesitate to file a formal DMCA complaint to Google and their hosting providers. If they have advertisements on their blog, start with them. It will hit them hard.

And in case a splog is a low authority site with extremely poor rankings in SERP's, don't worry about reporting them. In long term, Google will take care of them on their own.

Thanks for the reply Rajeev. I don't think the BlogCatalog one is important at all. However, I think the Google Friend one is great because even if people don't subscribe to my feeds, they can still see my updates on Blogger if they added me on their Friend list. The load time on my blog is fast because I really don't have much in it to slow it down.

@Rarst - Thanks for stopping by Rarst. Correct, the difference is in the perspective. Subscribers gained by other means may eventually unsubscribe if we doesn't meet their expectations. The best way is to let them take their decision on their own.

@Kai - There are 3 points associated with your question.

1) The number of widgets in your sidebar.
2) The usefulness of these widgets (for your readers).
3) How heavy they are?

Quite valid reasons. :) Went over my blog and I am doing decent by this checklist.

Still some blogs easily throw these rules out of the window and still do fine. Extra subscribers and profit outweights some lost readers for them.

I'm not sure about others, but you kinda speak out my mind in some parts. I personally, not too crazy about Pop Ups, I once came across a site with multiple pop-ups:

1. Subscribe?.. (I click 'no')
2. Are you sure?.. (I click 'Yes')
3. Allow us to change your mind.. (There goes my patience! Hit the big 'x' at upper right browser)

Frankly, if I like the content, normally I don't mind going through the trouble just to locate that 'subcribe via email' button, or following that blog. Being pushy, irritating is no way to please your visitors.
